The problem may become much more serious. Star scorer Carlos Avelar came out of the game Monday in the first half with a knee injury. He may be out for the season.
"Today when Carlos was hurt, I knew we were in for a rough time,” Coach Maeyer said after Monday’s game. “Our game lived from feeding him from midfield.” He said he was pleased with the way his players picked up the pace in the second half. "They were trying to play ball; they had their chances,” he said. “It’s like trying to play two teams, I’m missing the depth.”
Although the boys’ and girls’ track teams came in third in a threeway meet with Central and Brentsville at Central, individuals continued to have success. Holly Gangel came in first in the 3,200-meter run and second in the 1,600-meter run. She was also fourth in the high jump.
Among the other girls Dawn Havstad was fourth in the discus; Tomeka Carey was fourth in the long jump and tied for fourth in the 100-meter dash. Jessica Jacobs was fourth in the shot put, and Amber Early was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.
For the boys’ team, the 4 by 100 relay team of Jason Carter, Willie Shanks, Andy Clanigan and Carlos Avelar ran second. Willie Shanks was also fourth in the long jump, and Carlos was also second in the shot put. In the distance races Mark Jenkins was fourth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:58, the first time he has broken five minutes for that distance. Jason Waters ran third in the 3,200-meter run and Mike Grimsley ran fourth.
