Mr. Massie asked if the county would pay off the debt to the state retirement system for former school system employees who took early retirement. County Administrator John McCarthy said he thought the accountant would advise that could be done. If that is done out of the general fund surplus, it would reduce the proposed school budget by most of the money needed to pick up the “at risk” position, he said.
The supervisors are expected to adopt the school budget at their meeting next Monday.
