Van Dort
Endorsed
To the Editor
I truly feel privileged to have served as Treasurer of the Town of Washington and I am not seeking reelection due only to increased time pressures from my regular job. I consider the Treasurer’s position within the town’s government key to a successful Council.
Therefore, I endorse Louise van Dort for the next Treasurer of the Town of Washington.
Of the two candidates, only Louise has demonstrated both the necessary qualifications and the genuine interest to make this position work. Louise has spent many years volunteering time, energy, and expertise to town boards and commissions, the town administration, town sponsored functions, and town residents.
During the past sixteen years as the Treasurer of the Town of Washington I have seen the town budget expand over one thousand percent, changing not only in quantity, but also complexity. As a result of this drastic change the entire Town Council took a quantum leap into the twenty-first century. No longer can the needs of the town be accommodated in a couple of Saturday afternoons and a one hour meeting every second Wednesday of the month. No longer can the town’s finances be managed on a single piece of ledger paper and filed in a shoe box. And no longer can a treasurer be chosen without qualification.
Now it is essential to provide the town with a person that is not just willing to serve, but also qualified to serve. Today’s treasurer not only has to be able to understand and use governmental accepted accounting practices, understand the governmental audit process, understand and produce required monthly, quarterly, and annual federal and state reports, understand and control the budget process, and the many other functions of the position, but in the Town of Washington, the Treasurer is by default the Town Manager, Town Administrator, and water Authority Director and Superintendent. AJ1 of these require a knowledge of the inner workings of the town, which Louise has acquired through her association with and involvement in town government.
I applaud her candidacy and encourage all town residents to vote for Louise van Dort for Treasurer.
