In the very popular under 12 category, Adam Rogers won for the boys in 47:44, with Zach Gunter second in 50:37, Nathaniel Link third in 52:57 and Alexander Strange fourth in 54:57. Among the girls Shiloh Proper was first in 52:58, Lily Strange second in 61:44, Magan Fairbrother third in 64:20 and Jenny Waters fourth in 64:27.
George Sims pointed out that there were three generations of his family competing Saturday. His mother Grace Sims won the women’s over 60 category, finishing in 89:51. She was apparently the only one entered in her age group. The rest of the family did not win trophies, but Mr. Sims pushed daughter Elaine in a stroller while daughter Emily ran on her own.
Mr. Sims reported that he had intended to walk with his mother, but at the start she said, “Don’t feel you have to keep up with me if it hurts.” “That did it,” Mr. Sims reported, and he ran as much as he could finishing comfortably in front of his mother.
Another stroller pusher, Heidi Eastham, came in third in the women’s 19-29 age group.
A unique “frequent flyer” trophy was presented to Lowell Owsley of Jeffersonton, who has entered all 16 Fodderstack races. Mr. Owsley said the first Rappahannock Fodderstack Race was the first race he entered when he started running. “I like this,” he said. “This is my favorite race.”
In the intervening 15 years he has raced in 11 marathons and in shorter races all over Virginia and in Florida and Kansas. “I’m through with marathons,” he reported, “but wherever I am, I try to find a race to run. ”
