At the elementary school, with seven virtues included in the curriculum, the plan is to promote one per month. At the high school, with 14, English teacher Jon Heddleston and guidance counsellor Joyce Brown, who wrote the curriculum, said teachers may try to cover them all or pick from among them.
There are a variety of materials included and not all are literature-centered, but Mr. Heddleston and Mrs. Brown said they would rely chiefly on the English teachers to implement the curriculum. Each of the suggested units includes a form for students to use in evaluating the lesson.
The curriculum notes it is important for staff members to model the virtues they are trying to teach students. The introduction also states, “Our efforts are not to coerce students to agree to or accept a particular value; rather, we hope to build awareness that will encourage students to become ethically mature decision-makers. We believe this approach to learning eventually will lead to compliance among many students.”
