Gets New
Director
A retired Navy captain is now at the helm of the Museum of Culpeper History. Capt. John D. Hague, USN Ret., became the executive director of the E. Davis Street museum in early August.
Capt. Hague has a longterm interest in history which was generated in part by his father, who had a deep fascination with the two widely divergent views of the Civil War, North and South. Despite this starting point, and also despite living in the middle of much of Culpeper history near Raccoon Ford for the past 15 years, he said one of the noteworthy things about the local museum is that it doesn’t center on the years from 1861 to 1865. Instead, “It has everything from the 215 million-year-old dinosaur tracks to current history.”
He considers the museum, developed several years ago by a group of volunteer citizens with the help of a major donation from local historian Russell Guinn, of great potential value. Looking beyond the simple satisfaction of having an organization dedicated to the preservation of valued local institutions and memories, there is the more pragmatic view. “Tourist dollars are the cleanest dollars the town and county can have, and the museum is the only registered tourist attraction we now have,” he said.
