What plants are best suited for a roadway median garden? Is design really important in a garden space this small? How can we make sure that the little garden we’ve labored over in front of the courthouse is successful?
These questions are important and yet difficult to answer for the volunteers, both individuals and groups, who often take the lead on small public garden projects around libraries, playgrounds, and community centers.
Undeniably, public gardens pose unique challenges. On Oct. 7 and 8 at The State Arboretum of Virginia at Blandy Farm, participants in the symposium “In the Public Eye: The Design of Small Gardens” can gain valuable information and techniques to help ensure the success of these beautification projects. Panel members include garden designers, horticulturists, and volunteer organizers with experience in establishing such public plantings.
