Mental health professionals from Rappahannock Family Guidance Services will offer local residents the opportunity to learn about the signs and symptoms of depression and to participate in a free screening as part of National Depression Screening Day, Thursday, Oct. 6.
The free program will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Rappahannock Family Guidance Office in Washington.
National Depression Screening Day, which highlights Mental Illness Awareness Week, was developed by Harvard psychiatrist, Mr. Douglas Jacobs. Last week, this four year old national effort attracted more than 56,000 people to 1,300 sites across the country. National Depression Screening day inaugurated the concept of screening for a nental illness.
Participants at the Rappahannock Family Guidance Services Depression Screening will hear a brief talk on the causes, symptoms, and treatments of depression. Individuals will complete an anonymous written screening test of depression symptons and have the opportunity to discuss the results with a mental health professional.
