“Friends of the Library” filled The Theater in Washington Sunday afternoon, Sept. 18.
The occasion was a musical gala Library benefit organized by The Theater in Washington, the musicians who performed, and others, including Board members of the Friends of the Library. Both the Theater and the performers donated their services for the benefit of the Library.
Featured singers were Peter Barton, baritone, son of residents Martha and Edward Barton, and Deanna Briedis, soprano. Both of the singers live in the metropolitan Washington area. Michael Taylor, pianist, accompanied them, as did Jacqueline Grenning, clarinetist, who joined for several songs.
The singers selected music from a broad spectrum, ranging from Henry Purcell (1658-95) to Lucy Simon, with selections from The Secret Garden. In between, the audience heard folk music, Puccini and Verdi operatic selections, and popular songs by Leonard Bernstein, Cole
