Another vaccine that is available is called pneumococcal vaccine. Prenumoccocal pneumonia is the leading cause of pneumonia, and the vaccine is recommended for people who are at risk for complications from pneumococcal pneumoniea. High risk people are anyone over the age of 65, i anyone who’s immune system is compromised such as organ transplant recipients, persons with HIV infection, anyone without a spleen; adults with cardiovascular, lung, liver or kidney disease, diabetes and alcholism.

The cost for the flu vaccine is $10 and the pneumococcal vaccine is $20.

During October the Rappahannock County Health Department will have weekly flu shot clinics. The dates and times are: from 9-11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4; 1-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12; 9-11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 and 9-11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
