Jim Clark won Best Project in the Senior Division of the Science Fair for the third time in a row.
His project, a continuation of the award winning project of the past two years, dealt w ith how to solve the “Traveling Salesman Problem.” In this problem a salesman is supposed to cover his territory, stopping at each location in the shortest distance. The problem gets progressively more difficult and the number of locations is increased.
For the past two years Jim had various human subjects try to solve the problem and used the computer to keep track of how well they did. This year he worked on having the computer use two different approaches to solving the problem.
In one approach, “genetics,” the computer would have two solutions, one usually better than the other, he said. Then it would combine them, occasionally coming up with an even better one.
