Moreover, riders in the Foxhunter’s Series must wear “hunting attire and tack; no race or exercise saddles; no racing boots or breeches,” according to the rules. Any rider who has galloped racehorses can attest to the fact that riding low in the saddle at race speeds is far more natural in a saddle made for racing; yet foxhunter competitors must stay true to the series and keep their regular tack — adding lead as required for the official weight of 165 pounds.
The Seven Corners OwnerRider Timber Series, sponsored by Arundel Communications, is only slightly less exacting. Riders in these timber are allowed to use race tack and to wear silks and racing boots. But the horses also must have been qualified by “hunting six or more times and for at least half the hunting day by the legal owner or lessee or family member with any foxhunting or beagle pack during the current season.”
