COLT: Until a male horse reaches his fourth birthday, he is called a colt. After that, if left uncasterated, he becomes a stallion.
DAM: The mother of a horse.
FILLY: A female thoroughbred up to its fourth birthday is called a filly. Following Jan. 1 of her fourth year, she is referred to as a mare.
FURLONG: The standard measurement of racing distances, a furlong equals I /8th of a mile, 220 yards or 660 feet.
FLAK JACKET: (also vest, body protector) The National Steeplechase Association now requires the use of a protective vest for riders of all sanctioned jump races. The vest, also popular among eventing aficionados, is made to lit under the silks, often anchored by a tail between the legs. Made of high-density foam, the upper body protector protects the body somewhat from impact injuries and bruising.
