This takes on true meaning when the spectator realizes that professional jockeys are not allowed to own and race steeplechase horses. Of course, an easy way around that is to ride a family-owned horse, and that is perfectly legal, yet most of the runners tend to be legitimate amateur riders riding stable stars.
The Novice Rider Series, sponsored by Mrs. D.M. Smithwick, carries no rules about the horses that run, but riders must meet certain requirements. The series is for “riders who have not won a race under rules or five point-to-point races prior to Jan 1 of this year (excluding junior, pair and old-fashioned races.)”
By its very rules, the novice series offers young or inexperienced riders the chance to ride under the conditions of the racecourse. Other riders seen populating the ranks in the novice series races include a few trainers just having some fun while personally schooling young horses, or experienced exercise riders who find their weights just over what it would have taken to make a pro on the fiat. It may read like a mismatched marriage, but it works.
