Unperturbed, Cockbum rode a few races for his father’s stable, but at age 19 ended up traveling to America for a change of scenery. “My father encouraged me to do this while J was still young,” he explained, saying that though he did a brief factory stint in Boston, he soon found his way to Boyce to work for a friend of Mrs. George Greenhalgh, who had horses with Fred and Mercy in England.
“Here 1 was, 19 years old, in [Joyce, and I didn’t know what the hell was going on,” Cockbum recalled. “I had a ball with Billy and Trisha Gilbert, though, working at their Walnut Hall Farm. I really didn’t want to leave, but my dad asked me to come home and ride the pointers that next spring.”
So, Cockburn made his way back to Warwickshire, arriving in time to ride five winners in that first full season. He went that summer to the south coast of England, to Roy Trigg’s Findon yard in Sussex. “Roy would break all of the yearlings for [top NH trainer] Ryan Price,” Cockbprn said. “1 stayed on there, and started winning point-to-points down there as well as back at home.”
Cockburn took to heart all advice that was gleaned from household names in steeplechasing, heeding a warning from “Galloping Grandfather” and famous amateur jockey John Thome, father of Diana Henderson (former leading lady rider and wife of N11 trainer Nicky) and Jane
