Tragedy struck at a horse farm in Huntly last week.
Julia Bennett, the horse trainer and bam manager of Indian Run Farm, awakened at 3 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, to see an orange glow on the snow outside her bedroom window.
She immediately dialed 911 but the phone was burned out. She leaped out of bed, didn’t even put on shoes, and sprinted toward the horse barn. “The whole barn was in flames,” she said.
She and her friend Kim Todd opened doors to the eight stalls as fatft as they could, hoping that the horses Were unharmed and could run out and away from the fire, but thinking that the fire might have killed some already. Six of the horses made it to safety, but two horses, both field hunters, died in the blaze. One of the horses refused to even come out of her stall, and one other horse had to be shot because he was suffering from burns and had a broken leg.
