This Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m., “A Night at the Operetta” takes place at the Theatre at Washington and with it comes some of the best loved and most popular music of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Operetta brings to mind beautiful melodies, light-hearted romance, and happy endings. Above all, it conjures up the magic of Vienna at the turn of the century. “Gruss mir mein Wien” ("Say hello to Vienna for me”) is one of the selections to be heard form the music of Franz Lehar. Valentine’s month is well suited to the spirit of operetta which is reflected in the romantic song, "Dein 1st mein ganzes Herz” (“My Whole Heart is Yours”) by Franz von Suppe and is included in the Viennese music to be heard in the first half of the program.
America has its own share of popular composers of operetta and their music will be heard after the intermission. Of the three American composers represented in the program.
