Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) has saved $1.2 million in the last year with its load management program.

Under the program, customers volunteer to have load management switches placed on their electric water heaters and in return, REC provides them with free repairs to the water heater’s electrical components. A REC spokesman said some Rappahannock County customers are participating in this program.

The Cooperative saves money because during peak demand periods, normally the hottest part of the day in summer and the coldest times in winter, REC can automatically switch off customers’ water heaters for a short period of time. And because a water
