their race. A lead pony is generally a quieter companion for a racehorse as he travels to the paddock and, often accompanying a more fractious runner all the way to the start.
MAIDEN: Until a horse wins a race over a particular type of fence, he is referred to as a maiden in that specialty. A horse can have won lots on the Hat but remain a maiden, for instance, over hurdles. In 1992, the first-ever millionaire on the Hat to race over fences made his initial start, and victory, at the Morven Park races in October. Hodges Bay was impressive in his maiden triumph.
NOVICE: In sanctioned competition, if a horse has not won a race over the prescribed obstacle prior to the start of the current season, he is called a novice. For point-to-point purposes, this is often simplified into horses that have not won three times.
OLD-FASHIONED POINTTO-POINT: This is a cross-country race for fox-hunters. The contestants choose their own lines through fields and woods between designated check points.
