“When the bill arrives on my desk,” he said, “I intend to veto it unless there has been some evidence of openness to good faith negotiation and genuine reform on the part of the heretofore intransigent majority.”
Lt. Gov. Donald S. Beyer Jr., however, responded arguing that this bill calls for genuine reform.
“The welfare reform law we are about to send to the governor,” he said, “meets the most important test in this long debate: effectiveness. It will actually more people off of welfare and into jobs.”
Gov. Allen must sign or veto the bill within seven days after it reaches his desk, but changes can be made before the General Assembly adjourns Feb. 25.
