Wakefield Country Day School eighth-grade pianist Erin Nilan won the instrumental portion of the Lion’s Club’s Bland Music Contest for the second year in a row.
For the Sunday afternoon event she played “Sleeping Time” by Pinto.
RCHS senior Lisa Pullen won the vocalist competition singing “I Won’t Take Less than Your Love” by Don Schlitz. She sang without accompaniment.
Second place in the instrumental category went to eighth-grade violinist Kate Williams who played Allegro by J.H. Fiocco accompanied by Beth Benedetto on piano.
Second place in the vocalist category was won by 9-year old Rachel Lucas who sang “Ave Maria” by Schubert accompanied by Susan Hunt on piano.
Third place instrumentalist was eighth-grade pianist Rachel Tester who played the first movement of Aram Khatchaturian’s “Sonatina Allegro Gioleso.”
Third place vocalist went to eighth-grader Margo Haynes who sang “Hero” by Mariah Carey accompanied by Susan Hunt on the piano.
First place winners in both categories advance to regional cdmpetition at Taylor Junior High School in Warrenton March 19. They also each won S50. Second place winners receive S35, and third place winners receive SI5.
The contest was emceed by Bob Scott, who has taken on this responsibility for the past five years. Judges were Jo-An Getsinger and Kathy Kneupfer for vocalists and George Sims and Patrick Allen for instrumentalists.
Mr. Scott said the Bland Competition is named for James Bland, who wrote “Carry Me Back to Old Virginey.”
