The modern definition of an apprentice has come to mean simply a rider who has not won a total of 10 jumping races. Until a rider has won one race over fences, he receives an additional allowance of 10 pounds (This allowance is not honored in handicaps.) Until the apprentice has won five jumping races, he continues to receive seven pounds. Up through 10 wins, the rider is allowed five pounds.
