Rogers had for years Keen at the top of the Commonwealth’s steeplechasing charts as owtj^r, trainer and rider, but unmL, Cockburn came on as stable rider, Rogers’ stable was in a dry spell.
“We didn’t have quite the stable full back then as we do now,” Cockburn explained, saying though, that the Rogers stable reevolved into a force to be reckoned with, as he rode such prolific winners as Word of I lonor. Imperial Morn, The Centurion, Forty Dancers, Song of Songs and Heart of Oak, among others, for Joe Rogers and wife Donna.
In a new homeland, Cockburn found himself strangely at home in northern Virginia, making his mark in the hunt field as well as on the racecourse. In addition to riding most of the Rogers’ racehorses, Cockburn found himself whipping-in to joint-master Rogers for the Loudoun Hunt, eventually taking over as huntsman.
Further Americanization of Cockburn’s life resulted from his marriage to the former Chrissy Keyes in September of 1989. Changes that followed included their daughter Katie Blaker bom in October of 1990. Son Sam Crosby
