So we must look to the state.
Virginia legislators must take a hard look at this situation and then put together a funding program, perhaps financed by a small increase in the sales tax or a percentage of the lottery profits, that would provide a pool which localities could draw from to meet the additional demand on their budgets for unanticipated or extraordinary Special Education needs. If this is not done, smaller systems such as Rappahannock could face financial ruin.
This is the year we elect our state legislators. Special Education and its funding solution would be a meaningful issue to present to those who are seeking an office.
Public education is one of the most important functions our society provides for itself, and we must do all we can to insure it is provided at the highest level for all those who are eligible. Our future depends on it.
