The world of the thoroughbred racehorse is filled with strong bloodlineSj, fashionable families, traceable niches that can be followed from generation to generation as capable athletes. The same can be said about thoroughbred horsemen the world over — although some exceptional men and women enter the racing game cold, with no family legacy, more often the very best horsemen come from a long line of racing professionals in the family tree.
Such is the case with the 1994 leading rider on Virginia’s pointto-point circuit. Champion jockey Bay Cockbum has heritage on his side: he has four English Grand National winners, an Irish Sweeps victor, a Mackeson Gold Cup winner, champion hurdlers and steeplechase horses as well as a leading British owner, trainer and breeder in his pedigree, Cockbum could hardly help becoming a champion in his own right.
