Mares are allowed a five-pound allowance.
Sometimes it happens in this series that the riders of all of the entries personally weigh in at quite a bit less than the minimum 180 pounds. In this case, if all riders agree, the base weight may be lowered to, say, 160 pounds (for rider, clothing and tack) with the penalties for victories added on lop of the reduced base weight.
It only takes one rider who weighs more than that to keep the weights at the same, extremely testing, level of 180 and up. As any amateur handicapper knows, a horse’s talent and ability can be diminished by carrying weight over long distances and the average Seven Comers race is at least 2 1/2 miles. These horse and rider partnerships, too, deserve every last cheer when on the course.
