For everyone out there that loves the thought of going in a race, but isn’t quite ready for oneon-one steeplechasing, pair racing is perhaps the best answer.
It gives riders the chance to go at their own, chosen speed, with the option of going for fast time trophies when the comfort levels rise with the blood.
Hunter paces are timed events over natural hunting country, learns of two are given a prescribed course, which they have to complete at what they think is a lair hunting pace. Each couple has the chance to walk the course ahead of time.
The so-called “optimum time” is not revealed to riders until after the event, so half the mystique is in the educated guesswork it takes to determine how fast or slow the pace-setters took a particular course.
The first event of the hunter pace season was sponsored by the Bull Run Hunt on Feb. 19. The next chance for riders will be the Casanova Hunt Hunter Pace, on feb. 26, and the season will continue through the newly added Loudoun Hunt West on April 22. Hunter paces are spread all
