Legislation making n easier to carry a concealed weapon passed the House Courts of Justice Committee 16-6 Monday .
I his bill will make our streets infinitely more dangerous." said Dei Kenneth K. Melvin. D-Portsmouth. “It’s going to imperil police officers, and it's going to provide deadly handguns to the immature out there.”
Calling this legislation an overreaction. Del. Melvin said he and his colleagues never thought this bill would pass.
“We've gone too far here." he said. "I'm voting against this.”
Although he offered several amendments to the proposal Del. Jerrauld C. Jones, D-Norfolk, said he agreed with Del. Melvin's position.
“I’ve offered a number of amendments to the bill this morning to make what 1 consider a bad piece of legislation just a little bit more bearable if it is indeed to become a law of this commonwealth.” he said.
