About the cover artist:
Former master of foxhounds for the Casanova Hunt, artist Gretchen Stephens is equally at home with reins in each hand as a paintbrush. A specialist in animal portraits, sporting art and landscapes, Stephens created the cover art in an oil medium.
“This was one snowy day at the Casanova Hunt Point-to-Point hack in 19b 7, " Stephens said as she described the steeplechasing scene. "It was the second year the races had been held at Mt. Sterling [Farm, near Warrenton and where the season opener is still held. J This was one of the timber races, as the horses landed from the fence entering the stretch. ”
Stephens also paints in watercolors and pastels, but she said that oils were most appropriate to capture the cold, overcast day of thoroughbred sport in the cover painting.
Stephens work has hung in many area galleries, most recently in a sold out showing at the Fifth Street Gallery in Warrenton. She said that she intends to paint more racing scenes this season, and to continue with her hunt and hound work.
