New Pay Scales

Contemplated

For All School

Administrators

New pay scales for administrators will be included in the upcoming school system budget.

Superintendent David Gangel said the salaries of school administrators are below pay in most surrounding areas. He noted the county has a difficult time recruiting people for these positions.

The new pay scales will be based on the teacher’s salary scale computed on the basis of a 12-month rather than 10-month contract with a supplement for “additional responsibility.”

For school principals that amounts to an additional SI 3,083, which brings the top of the principal’s scale to S57,003, the current state average for building principals.

For assistant principals the “responsibility” addition is 58,000, for the director of pupil personnel it is $4,700, and for the learning environment coordinator an additional $2,000. The assistant superintendent’s position adds $15,000 to the teachers’ salary scale.

Dr. Gangel said he plans to implement this pay scale by placing the administrators on the scale where their salaries now put them and move them up two steps each year. For the first year this will mean an additional $11,000, he added.

When Dr. Gangel introduced these pay scales to the School Board last week. Chairman Beverly Massie said it is also important not to raise administrative salaries so much that gifted teachers are tempted toleave the classroom for the money.
