But for every Holy Bull, there are a thousand other thoroughbreds, although not as talented or well bred, that are providing excitement and enjoyment for their riders around the world.
Many thoroughbreds retire from the flat track to the hunt field or show ring. The list of Virginia ‘chasing champions is far too long to list all of the horses who use the hunt field as an active time off arena.
Event rider Jil Walton and her mare Patrona, a racing retiree, are topping the international charts in three-day eventing. The pair represented the United States in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games.
According to Walton, “Thoroughbreds are smart and they have natural speed. I can’t think of any other horse that 1 would rather ride around the Rolex [Ky.J cross country course.”
Top international competitors in show jumping like Touch of Class, who won two golds at the 1984 summer Olympics in Los Angeles, are proving that racehorses can go on to even greater “heights” after they leave the track.
Thanks to the patient training and care from horsemen like the troopers at the Kentucky Horse Park, many retired horses get a new lease on life and their newfound potential can be realized.
