Sutphin and Jimmy Bennett. The present owners, Rose and Jerry Foster, leased the store for a couple of years from Mr. Bennett and owned it along with Phil and Tradue Smith for two years. The Fosters have been sole owners for about nine years.
A major renovation was done on the store three years ago, which added a lot of space and a walk-in cooler. There is also a large area for preparing breakfast and lunch items.
Mrs. Foster opens the store at 4 a.m., and said her earliest customer usually gets there around 4:30. She serves up sausage and egg, bacon and egg, and sausage gravy biscuits. “Whatever they want, we’ll fix it, even pancakes,” she said. “In the summer, we cook 12 to 15 dozen eggs a day. One morning 1 fried up 17 pounds of bacon,” she added.
Lunchtime is also very busy. Employees at Hillsdale make their own chicken salad, egg salad, cole slaw, and tuna salad. All kinds of sandwiches are available, and a hot meal is offered daily. Last Monday the hot lunch consisted of a roast beef sandwich and mashed potatoes with gravy for $2.89. It looked like enough to fill up just about anybody. Other lunches have included beans and combread, pork loin sandwiches, veal steak with fries, homemade vegetable soup and potato soup.
Hillsdale is also one of two stores in the county which sells both lottery and lotto tickets. Their biggest winner for lotto was $2,400, but their biggest scratch ticket winner was for $15,000. Mrs. Foster said that they gave away about $40,000 during the first year from scratch tickets.
