Until fifty years ago there were no art galleries in the United States and artists had to travel to Europe, largely England to study. A painter familiar to most, Gilbert Stuart, was the most successful of portrait painters, having done over 1100 of them, 100 of George Washington alone.
The first break with British painting was landscape painting, for example Thomas Cole’s Hudson Valley paintings. A humorous sideline was that Britishers couldn’t believe the colors so he pasted some leaves on cardboard and took them to England as proof. Then paintings of everyday life were wanted, followed by still lifes — realism, and then Childe Hassam whose paintings were influenced by the Impressionists. ' *
After World War II, the tables were turned and Europeans came -to America to study, New York becoming the center of art. Mrs. George Bryson presented her report on ,Jhe Virginia State Conference held in Richmond in March.
For the next meeting, Mrs. Edgar F. Puryear, Jr. gave information bn the Pilgrimage to Old Alexandria on May 9th with walking tours, visits to Ramsay House and Carlyle House and with lunch at Gadsby’s Tavern. 1
