Suggested methods include mowing the edges of wooded areas, enriching soil in gardens, mulching soil areas not planted, cultivating the soil areas not mulched or planted, hand pulling weeds and disposing of them instead of composting them, using a line trimmer for clearing areas that cannot be mowed, or using native species that compete with exotic species whenever possible. A chemical control such as a glyphosate herbicide can be used in the spring, when be reapplied in the middle of the growing season for total eradication.

Purple loosestrife is a prolific seed producer that readily sprouts from cut-off stems, underground roots, and plant fragments. Several purple-flowered stalks can grow from a single plant, each stalk producing between 100,000 and 300,000 seeds. It can survive and multiply in many soil types and moisture conditions. It infests habitats such as wet meadows, pasture wetlands, cattail marshes, stream and river banks, lake shores, irrigation ditches, drainage ditches, and stormwater retention basins.
Purple loosestrife harms wetlands by crowding out native plants such as cattail and bulrush, and by eliminating nutritional food sources and shelter for wildlife. When conditions are right, a small isolated cluster of loosestrife plants can spread and cover a marsh in just one growing season, impacting wildlife such as waterfowl, muskrat, beaver, marsh birds, shorebirds, raptors, songbirds, amphibians and reptiles, and dquatic insects. The plants can choke natural and artificial waterways, slowing natural flows and promoting the deposit of silt, which causes long-term water quality degradation and requires costly maintenance.
