Gets Grant

The County’s local literacy group, LVA Rappahannock, received the welcome news last week that the 7Eleven Store has awarded it a “People Who Read Achieve” literacy grant in the amount of $2,000. This is the third such grant that the literacy group has received in as many years.
The previous awards have been used for the purchase of two IBMcompatible computers, related equipment and software, which is helpful, not only for learners seeking to develop their reading skills or obtain a high school equivalency certificate (GED), but also for those who aim at improving their job skills by becoming familiar with the use of computers.
The present award will permit the literacy volunteers to purchase a Macintosh computer, similar to those used in the public schools here, conversion software, and other equipment.
Our aim is to offer a program of one-on-one instruction, using conventional textbooks, supplemented with interactive computer teaching aids. The latter materials are effective in leading the student over familiar ground, first explaining the subject matter, then testing and correcting the students on the results, so that the instructional response is immediate. It goes without saying that out tutors are learning too. Most of us are, after all, antediluvian — bom and raised long before the overwhelming flood of modem cybernation swept over us.
The literacy group meets in our office in the Library basement from 7-9 p.m. twice weekly, on Mondays and Wednesdays. Individual instruc* tion may be arranged at other times by appointment.
All are welcome, from basic learners, to GED aspirants. There is no charge, since all of our tutors are volunteers, and the textbooks are lent, not given.
It gives all of us great pleasure to think that we can offer help and encouragement to those who wish to improve their education or job skills. We welcome too new volunteers who would give their time and skills in this community enterprise.
