Figures available from the School Board office indicate that providing special education services adds about $3,500 to the cost of educating a child in elementary school and about $2,500 for a high school student.
These figures are for the 1993-94 school year and were compiled by Director of Pupil Personnel Margarita Piper as part of the required report she submits to the state each year on the special education programs at the schools.
According to Mrs. Piper the cost for a regular education student in the elementary school was $4,070 last year, and the cost for a regular education student in the high school was $5,872. The cost for a special education student in the elementary school was $7,575, and the cost for a special
