Though such reforms have been overwhelmingly defeated in the past, Rep. Wolf predicted they have a better chance this session. It would be “a mistake," he said, for the 104th Congress to adjourn without reforming campaign financing.
Congress is changing, Rep. Wolf said, and the new Republican majority recognizes that the public expects fiscal restraint, even when it affects hometown projects.
That was true, he said, when he voted to cut $4 million from the Air and Space Museum planned at Dulles Airport, in his district.
“That’s not a program that is so fundamental to people’s lives. That’s not a feeding program, it isn’t a cancer cure program. It’s a building, and I want to see it done someday, and I think it will.”
Forced to make a choice between programs that affect people and those that involve bricks and mortar, Rep. Wolf said, “I’d be inclined to go with people programs.”
