Rappahannock’s farms at one time were financially self-sufficient and constituted an agricultural industry. Nowadays our farms are only marjjinally successful. A third of the farmers surveyed reported gross sales of less than $5,000, while bettef than half had gross sales of less than $ 10,000. 7
Given these numbers one might reasonably expect that our farmland would be turning into house lots or other nonagricultural uses, and that the number of farms in the county would be dwindling rapidly. This is not happening. As the Census of Agriculture reports, from 1978 through 19$2 the number of acres farmed and the number of fa£ms in Rappahannock remained reasonably stable. ■*
