Recent stationary thunderstorms and rains caused major ecological changes to watersheds, and damaged roads and trails, throughout Shenandoah National Park.

Rains, beginning in some areas as early as June 22, saturated the soil, so much of the rain that fell on June 27 and 28 flooded stream drainages. Entire drainages in the park were changed as a result of numerous landslides, and stream channels were rerouted and re-shaped. Massive boul? ders were carried downstream, and in some areas stream channels were cut 15 to 20 feet down to bedrock.

Some areas that once contained 15 to 30-foot-wide bubbling mountain streams and that were covered with trees were “blown out,” resulting in a new channel that is 150 to 200 feet wide, treeless, and filled with rocks and large debris dams of de-barked trees.

Indications are that natural changes, as described above, may happen only once in every 100, or even 1000, years. Therefore, the significance of this natural, catastrophic event is extremely important scientifically.
