Virginia might not be the Old West, but residents are now finding it easier to legally carry a weapon.

The newly-enacted concealed weapons law allows residents to obtain a permit to carry a concealed gun as long as they haven’t been convicted of a felony, convicted of two or more misdemeanors in a three-year period immediately prior to their application or been involuntarily committed because of a mental health problem.

Before July, the concealed weapon law required individuals requesting a permit to show compelling need to the local circuit court judge, who had great discretion in approving the application.
