Mr. McCarthy and Sheriff John Henry Woodward explained if Rappahannock customers with these Culpeper exchanges were switched to the Rappahannock E-911 dispatch system, the Culpeper dispatch center would no longer have the call back feature for Culpeper numbers, and Culpeper residents have the majority of telephones on these exchanges. So Bell Atlantic officials have said they will not switch the Rappahannock customers until Culpeper also has E911. Mr. McCarthy said that is probably still one year off.
Sheriff Woodward said he had asked Bell Atlantic officials if Rappahannock customers would ever be switched if Culpeper never implements E-911 and did not receive an answer.
The Rappahannock Fire and Rescue Association will try to get the Culpeper organization to request the Culpeper Board of Supervisors to approve going ahead and switching Rappahannock customers before E911 is implemented in Culpeper. Bell Atlantic has indicated it would be willing to do so if the Culpeper government requests it, Mr. McCarthy explained.
Customers with 987, 675, 636, and 635 numbers will be switched to E-911 on August 1, Mr. McCarthy and Sheriff Woodward reported.
