After serving with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, he attended and graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He moved to Arlington in 1976 and had been a resident of The Plains since 1989.
In 1991 after many years in the construction industry Mr. Burns decided to change careers and became a school teacher. He taught upper school mathematics at Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly until his death.
Survivors include his wife, Wilson Landford of The Plains; two sons, Bradley S. Bums of Sterling and Tod S. Bums of Kill Devil Hills and three grandchildren.
Private memorial services will beheld at a later date.
