The following is a commonly asked question concerning children’s eyes.
When should 1 first have my children’s eye examined?
A child’s first eye exam by anive doctor should be at the time he or she enters kindergarten. This is a time when the child is asked to make visual discriminations necessary to be able to read and write.
These tasks require the ability to be able to discriminate detail at a near point, at a desk for example. The eyes must be able to change focus quickly and efficiently, maintain a clear focus long enough to the able to get the necessary visual information, and work together in order to keep from "seeing double” or “skipping lines” or losing ones place.
- Visual screenings performed by a school nurse too frequently miss important visual and medical problems. Frequently missed problems include astigmatism, hyperopia (farsigntedness), and amblyopia (lazy eye), to name a few.
