This is the time of year when Japanese beetles are attacking all kinds of plants, and Mrs. Alexander has received calls about these too. If someone brings in a diseased plant to diagnose, she suggests that they bring in a piece which is part diseased and part healthy; that makes it easier for her to diagnose. If she is unable to help, the plant can be mailed to Virginia Tech and they will provide an answer.
She and other master gardeners are well versed in pest management and many other subjects, including basic botany, soils and fertilizer, insects, propagation, pruning, indoor foliage, fruits, lawns, vegetables, trees and shrubs, perennial and annual flowers, landscape design and more. The class was very extensive and each subject was taught by an expert in that field.
Mrs. Alexander said that the classes are taught at different extension offices, so that if one is more convenient to go to than another, that is a possibility. She was impressed at how knowledgeable and interesting the teachers were. As part of the pruning class, the students learned to
