Sow the seeds evenly and thinly, one-eighth inch deep, in rows about 4 to 6 inches apart. Cover lightly with fine soil and water with a misty spray. Keep the ground evenly moist, but not soaked, until the seedlings appear (about 12 to 21 days) and the young plants are growing well.

The proper amount of moisture is curcial. If the soil dries out, even for a short period, results may be disappointing.
Shading the bed or cold frame with burlap or similar material will give protection from scorching sun and drying winds. This canopy also helps keep the ground moist. As the plants grow, gradually raise the canopy and eventually remove it completely.
