Bluemont Concert Series. The concert begins at 7 p.m.; admission is $3 per person.
Specializing in swing-era dance music, the seventeen-members Tom Cunningham Orchestra performs marvelously evocative renditions of the sounds of the ‘40s and ‘50s, from the Dorsey Brothers to County Basie. They won Maryland Public Television’s recent “Big Band Battle” by a two to one margin, indisputably demonstrating their popularity.
In tuxedoed style, the band also accompanies the singing of Julian Hipkins and Robin Cunningham, who bring back the big band hits in toetapping rhythm. Mike Joyce of The Washington Post, said the Tom Cunningham Band’s “collective strength is best displayed in richly colorful passages...and amid jaunty, bpppish harmonies.”
Plan to bring a lawn chair or a blanket; homemade refreshments will be available during the evening prepared by the Junior Chamber of Commerce as their own fundraiser. In bad weather, concerts will be held at the Culpeper High School auditorium. Bluemont Summer concerts offer wonderful door prizes provided by our local shopkeepers.
