Mid-to late July is a good time to start pansies for a tremendous show next spring. A cold frame is an ideal place to start the seed, and it’s probably empty now. Leave the top wide open for good ventilation, unless a downpour threatens.
Prepare the Soil Carefully
If you don’t have a cold frame, a specially prepared seed bed in a partially shaded area is also satisfactory. Prepare the soil by working in generous amounts of peat moss or compost, plus a balanced garden fertilizer. Follow package directions. In a cold frame, you may prefer to use a mixture of two parts garden loam to one part commercial planting formula or vermiculite. Pulverize the surface of the planting area and level it out.
Because pansy seed is light and fine, a packet or two of pansy seed will give you all the plants you will need. For fall seeding, choose a coldtolerant cultivar, not one of the next
