She started in January after taking a computer class offered at the Flint Hill Fire Department. “It’s been good for me,” she said of losing her job at Aileen, which forced her to decide what to do next. She said once her unemployment ran out she got help from the Trade Readjustment Act, which will pay for her schooling even when her eligibility for a personal stipend runs out in May.
She is taking classes in using computers, editing and proofreading, psychology and math and English.
Peggy Jones is also in the same program at Lord Fairfax. She said she started by taking classes at Learning and Beyond in Warrenton. “I wanted to continue my education before looking for a job,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed going back to school except for the homework.”
Both women are doing well in their course work and will have no trouble keeping the “C” average they need to continue to receive assistance under the Trade Readjustment Act.
Losing a job because the company went out of business was nothing new for Lorraine Sisk. She said her husband was two years short'of retirement when the Avtex plant in Front Royal closed.
