Universal firing Program to hire an additional deputy.
Part of the Clinton administration program to add 100,000 policemen, this grant program would be 75 percent funded by the federal government and 25 percent by the county for three years, Sheriff Woodward explained.
He noted that he had followed guidance from the supervisors not to apply for grants with strings attached, and so he had not applied under several programs that would have required the county to pick the salary for an additional three years after the" federal grant runs out. However, this grant program does not have that’ requirement, he said.
He said the grant is for “community policing” and a person has to be assigned to community policing as a result of the grant, but the new deputy hired does not have to be that person, Sheriff Woodward said.
He said if he receives the grant, he would probably assign Capt. Jeff Brown, who is already involved with the community through the DARE program, to the community policing position. Capt. Brown would then be involved in working with various community groups trying to improve relationships with law enforcement.
