As voters prepare to go to the polls next Tuesday to select representatives to the General Assembly, Constitutional Officers, and local representatives to the Board of Supervisors and School Board, two of the county’s precincts are over the limit of 750 voters that is supposed to require voting machines.
However, the county will remain one of only two in the state with all paper ballots.
There are 3,833 eligible voters, 774 in Hampton District, 732 in Jackson District, 712 in Piedmont District, 752 in StonewallHawthorn District and 862 in Wakefield District, split between 598 in Flint Hill Precinct and 264 in Chester Gap Precinct.
Registrar Nancy Leake said over 400 voters had been added to the list since March. She attributed much of the increase to interest in the contest for Sheriff. Many people have already cast absentee ballots and a large number of them have only been interested in voting in that one race, she said.
